How to Determine Your Decorating Style

Through the wonder and ease of the internet, we now have instant access to decorating information, photos and even online quizzes to help choose a decorating style. Here we outline the basics of three very popular styles, show examples of great artwork used with these genres, and offer links to some quizzes to more specifically determine your personal tastes.

ASIAN STYLE

Perhaps you prefer the simplistic, balanced and elegant style that Asian decor represents.

With Asian style there is an emphasis on architecture and natural materials, rather than the cluttering of spaces. Shoji screens, bamboo, wicker and fine art also adorn the various rooms. It also speaks of practicality as furniture pieces often serve multiple functions.

Artwork in serene nature themes and elegant cultural drama add harmony to the home.

MODERN STYLE

Clean lines and simple contours are most often found in modern, or contemporary, design styling. Furniture is usually kept to a minimum but is also very functional.

Glass, metal and stone accessories provide the smooth texture in the space while large pieces of artwork embellish the walls.

Bold colors that accentuate neutral color furnishings are common but sometimes rooms of all white are also seen. Many times the color scheme is monochromatic. Black is also often used as a neutralizer.

Designers, architects and artists are sometimes partial to this decorating style because of the simple geometry, lines and cleanliness rendered in the finished space. Although this style tends to be sleek and sophisticated, it can also be stark and cold feeling to some, compared to other styles.

Bold graphics, abstract art, and daring experimental art is best suited for a modern decor.

TRADITIONAL STYLE

Traditional style is usually formal and well balanced with the use of rich fabrics and period furniture such as Chippendale and Queen Anne in dark stained wood tones with some carving details. Leather sofas, antiques and vases finish out the rooms.

Burgundies, blues, and greens are generally favored. Fabrics with florals and stripes are prevalent. Even with the formal look it can be warm and inviting. Fabrics usually are not overly textured or shiny, but instead blend in.

Walls can be either painted or wallpapered or both, while trim is usually painted white with a glossy finish.

Artwork incorporating classic masterpieces or beautiful still lifes and landscapes are often found with traditional decorating schemes.
